Family Support

This is my “What I Wish I’d Known” page. 
I pray these resources bring you some hope as you walk the path of loving someone with an addiction.  There was so much I didn’t know, and while its too late for my son, it’s not too late for someone else’s son, daughter, husband . . .  may you be encouraged knowing you are not alone ~ Dee

LOCAL Family Support Meetings

  • Al-Anon: a mutual support program for people whose lives have been affected by someone else’s drinking.

  • PAL (Parents of Addicted Loved Ones): for parents and family members who are trying to help a loved one in seeking recovery

  • Walking Beside You: a safe place for family members to gather and discuss the challenges of living with or caring for someone with substance use challenges. Contact: 540-825-3366 or SEERecovery@rrcsb.org

LOCAL Family Support Organizations

  • FODA (Families Overcoming Drug Addiction): local Facebook group for families thrown into chaos due to a family member’s drug addiction. Contact: myfodafamily@gmail.com
  • Living the Dream Foundation: provides information on available resources for those in need of services for substance abuse, depression and suicide. Contact: (540) 718-5701, livingthedreamculpeper@gmail.com or find on Facebook
  • S.E.E. Recovery Center:  The S.E.E. (Support, Encourage, Empower) Recovery Center offers family support meetings as well as the opportunity to speak with someone about your loved ones’ mental health or substance use challenges. Staff members are available up to one hour before closing to assist with attending appropriate groups or other services. All services a S.E.E. are free and open to everyone.
    Current Hours: M-F: 8am to 10pm, Sat: 9am to 3pm, Sun: 4:30pm to 8:30pm

  • SpiritWorks: a recovery community organization in Warrenton comprised of, and led primarily by, people who live in recovery from addiction. They deliver peer to peer programs and services for children, youth, and adults living in recovery from the disease of addiction but provide some family support meetings as well. Services are free.

  • Team Jordan Suicide Prevention:  provides a program of support and response for Survivors of Suicide.

LOCAL Trainings & Courses

  • Narcan Training: Narcan (Naloxone) is an easily administered nasal spray that can help reverse and overdose and help keep someone alive until first responders can arrive.  Trainings take place typically once a month in Culpeper and Warrenton.  Participants receive 2 FREE doses of Narcan upon completion of course.  Dates are posted here on the UPCOMING EVENTS page.  If your schedule does not allow you to attend a training, the Chris Atwood Foundation will mail you a free Narcan kit after registering and watching a short training video.
  • ACEs Training: This course totally changed the way I view addiction.  ACEs (Adverse Childhood Experiences) trauma can lead to chronic health concerns like substance abuse and mental health challenges, gain a better understanding of what is trauma and how it affects our biology.It is well worth your time and is brought to you FREE by the Rappahannock Area Community Services.  Trainings take place in Fredericksburg and are typically held 4 times a year.  Dates and details are posted on our UPCOMING EVENTS page.
  • Mental Health First Aid: Substance use and mental health struggles go hand in hand.  In this training course, you learn risk factors and warning signs for mental health and addiction concerns, strategies for how to help someone in crisis, and where to turn for help.  Several trainings take place throughout the year, ranging from free to $25.  Dates and details are posted on our UPCOMING EVENTS page.

ONLINE Family Support Meetings

  • Al-Anon – support for those affected by someone else’s alcoholism, offers online and phone meetings
  • CODA (Co-Dependents Anonymous): a program of recovery from codependence, where participants may share their experience, strength, and hope in their efforts to develop healthy relationships online meetings
  • CRAFT family support videos practical strategies to help motivate change
  • español reunión de apoyo familiar (Spanish Speaking Family Support Meetings) from The Herren Project
  • Families Anonymous – online meetings for family and friends of those with drug, alcohol or related behavioral issues
  • The Herren Project provides online support meetings for spouses, parents, and family members
  • Nar-Anon – support for those affected by someone else’s addiction online meetings, live chat and forum available
  • Partnership for Drug Free Kids – online support community for parents who may have children experimenting with, or dependent on, substances. They are hosting a series of live online gatherings to share insight and ideas on managing teen and adult children during this unique time.
  • SMART Recovery Friends and Family – secular, cognitive behavioral-based program offers online meetings for families and friends of someone recovering from substance abuse

  • CRAFT Method from the Center for Motivation & Change: their BLOG has lots of good information. And check out their helpful videos on applying the CRAFT method, or their Parent Guide, and Partner Guide
  • The Herren Project provides online support meetings for spouses, parents, and family members
  • Mom Power: one of my favorite support sites
  • Partnership for Drug Free Kids: tools for parents such as signs of drug use and finding treatment
  • Partnership to End Addiction offers helpful articles from parents who’ve been there, a Family Video Series with messages of hope, credible information & resources, and offers free Parent Coaching over the phone by CRAFT trained volunteers who have lived experience. Its free, and its available in English or Spanish.
  • SAMHSA: resources for families coping with mental and substance use disorders. Includes a treatment locator.
  • SMART Recovery Family & Friends: tools to help both you and your loved one, based on SMART Recovery and CRAFT Therapy, find online and in-person friends & family meetings.
  • Sober Families: helping families with addiction education and support.

Helping Children Affected by Parental Substance Use

  • Helping a child whose parent is struggling with addiction

  • Kit for Kids PDF with some good conversations starters for those who want to help a child of addiction
  • Sesame Street has created a new character, 6-year-old Karli, whose mom struggles with drug addiction.  Watch Karli’s videos, access resources like coloring pages, music, and articles with topics like how to explain addiction to a child.
  • Camp Mariposa is a national addiction prevention and mentoring program for youth ages 9-12 who have been affected by the substance use disorder of a family member. Camp Mariposa is offered free of charge to all families. It is offered multiple times throughout the year, and the closest location is in West Virginia near the Southwest Virginia border.
